Wisconsin Public Television seeks a chief engineer (CE) to perform highly technical, supervisory and visionary work in Madison, Wisconsin. The CE has responsibility for day-to-day technical operations of the Wisconsin Public Television production and remote facilities, including supervision of all engineering staff at the television production center and the WHA-TV DTV transmitter. This work requires the use of independent judgment working from broad institutional policies and general objectives.
The CE manages the human, physical, financial and operational activities of the engineering department, and is responsible for research, evaluation, procurement, testing, installation, training, operation and maintenance of all electronic equipment and systems for television production and broadcast transmission. With other senior managers, the CE develops, communicates and implements a vision for new services and technical resources.
Overall emphasis is on
(a.) planning and implementation of complex production systems which increasingly rely on advanced computer technology and applications and
(b.) guiding and supporting the evolution of WPT from traditional production and distribution systems to new and constantly-changing technology iterations.
Desirable to have:
· significant progressively responsible professional experience in television production engineering;
· ATSC broadcast transmission;
· SBE Certification.
Work includes day, night, weekend and holiday hours. The appointment requires a two-year probationary period. A criminal history records check will be conducted prior to appointment.

POSITION SUMMARY: Primarily responsible for news reporting from WPR's west-central or southwest region and hosting weekly regional issues talk show. Position reports to WPR News Director and is responsive to regional manager of the bureau where the reporter is posted.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: 1. Prepare short and long-form news reports for local and statewide use, including: field reporting on issues and events appropriate for state coverage as assigned by WPR's News Director; packaging material originated in regional studios for use statewide. Submit stories and scripts to assigned editor; make edits, produce and file scripts/stories in appropriate computer file. As appropriate, this reporter will also supply photos and other content for WPR's news website, WPRNews.org (new site ready beginning late 2010 or early '11). Content will be based on the nature of the story, in consultation with News Director or designee. Reporter should also be familiar with multimedia reporting, including social networking sites, etc., and be able to consider ways to incorporate them into his or her work as appropriate. 2. Participate in daily local and WPR-network assignment meetings and conference calls, suggest strong ideas for statewide coverage; stay abreast of issues in assigned beat area. Maintain bureau archives through appropriate filing system, and/or databases. 3. Participate in news division, regional office, and statewide meetings when requested. Participate in team concept regarding programming, production and promotion of stations assigned through the regional office, and under the supervision of the Regional Manager. 4. In conjunction with the regional manager, produces and hosts an hour-long, issues-based weekly talk show on the regional Ideas Network station. Specific duties may include: Researching, pre-interviewing and scheduling guests; producing weekly on-air promos and providing information for news releases for each program; website updates, including preparing program for online download, and providing written descriptions for both downloadable past programs and promotion for future programs. 5. Participate in on-air fund raising or public appearances/special events as assigned. 6. Position includes occasional weekend and/or evening assignments and travel to cover regional and special assignments. 7. QUALIFICATIONS 1. Bachelor's degree required. 2. Up to two or more years full time experience in broadcast journalism with strong on-air skills. 3. Background The Lee Ester News Fellowship is designed for a recent graduate or someone in the early years of his or her career and shows promise as a radio news reporter. The ideal candidate has some basic reporting and production skills, but could benefit from mentoring and closer supervision before testing out the job market. The successful candidate will work as a part-time reporter in Wisconsin Public Radio's Madison newsroom for nine months. Wisconsin Public Radio consists of 2 state-wide networks of 31 stations.
The Lee Ester Fellow will receive close supervision and coaching as a reporter, in areas that include story selection, interviewing, sound editing, writing, and developing in-depth stories. As the successful candidate will be someone who already has some level of experience as an intern or part-time reporter, this will be a higher-level of instruction and feedback, with a higher level of work product expected.
POSITION SUMMARY The Lee Ester News Fellow is considered a developmental reporter at WPR. He or she will be a general-assignment reporter responsible for producing newscast-length stories and, occasionally, feature-length material. Regular and concentrated coaching on writing, editing, voicing and other aspects of radio news reporting is an important developmental element of this fellowship. The news fellow will also participate in WPR's online news efforts, such as posting photos or raw audio to our Web site, helping to create special pages for future reporting projects, etc.
Specific duties:
1. Participate in news planning meetings to suggest story ideas, help focus story angles. 2. Responsible for start-to-finish preparation of balanced, issue-oriented, analytical reports as assigned, for use in daily news/information programs and segments/casts. Includes selecting appropriate sources; conducting and recording interviews; writing scripts, and host introductory copy. 3. As appropriate, will assist staff in online aspects of WPR's news coverage, including but not limited to posting photos and raw audio, and helping to create special pages to highlight reporting series and other projects. 4. As appropriate, and with news director's input, choose an area of concentration for the duration of the fellowship. This would be an area not already claimed by an exiting reporter's beat and would not preclude assignment on other topics. 5. Write introductory copy, scripts and billboards in conversational, broadcast style. Translate bureaucratic/technical/political lingo into lay terms with accuracy. Localize material to better serve individual network stations. 6. Keep up on current issues, events and newsmakers in Wisconsin. 7. Operate control board, field equipment for recording, mixing.
Essential job functions: Produce stories for WPR newscasts and news programs using WPR equipment and in accordance with WPR policies and standards.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS · Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university · Previous broadcast news internship or very early career professional experience · Demonstrated ability to generate news story ideas · Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines. · Demonstrated ability to operate radio production equipment including control board, ISDN telephone system, and Audio Vault (or similar) production system.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS · Passion for news and news reporting · Knowledge and understanding of public broadcasting journalistic ethics · Some experience uploading sound, photos and text to web pages.
COMPENSATION: Salary for the Lee Ester News Fellow will be $1,300 per month for the 9-month fellowship (75% equivalent of full time annual salary of $20,915). The Lee Ester News Fellow will also receive health and dental benefits during the term of the fellowship.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Special Events Manager is responsible for planning, implementing and managing special events for Wisconsin Public Television (WPT) and Friends of Wisconsin Public Television (Friends) including the annual Garden Expo and Quilt Expo, fund raising and promotional events that each draw over 10,000 participants and hundreds of vendor and volunteers. This position reports to the Director of Development as part of WPT's Development Department whose mission is to raise net revenue for WPT. The Special Events Manager works closely with the Communications Department on all assigned community and fundraising events.
SPECIFIC DUTIES 1. Develop, manage and implement events related to WPT, Friends and their goals. a. Work closely with WPT management to see that event goals and objectives are clearly defined, appropriately assigned and successfully executed. Develop, implement and monitor budgets and time lines for events and provide timely reports to senior management, partners and others as appropriate. b. Work to see that events enhance priority station communication and strategic initiatives and meet the fundraising objectives.
2. Manage and direct all aspects of WPT's major fundraising events, Garden Expo and Quilt Expo. a. Establish and execute strategic direction for these major events. b. Establish budget with expense, gross revenue and net revenue projections. Maintain systems to monitor budget in coordination with Friends' Accountant. c. Maintain mutually beneficial relationships with high-profile partners such as UW-Extension, Nancy Zeman Productions and other community and business partners. d. Solicit sponsorship support for Expos in coordination with WPT's Corporate Development office. Steward event sponsors and in-kind donors. e. Coordinate renewal of vendor partners for each Expo including establishing pricing and placement practices and mapping event layout, balancing needs of vendors, visitors and our educational goals. f. Coordinate the activities and the participation of the volunteer steering committees for each event. g. Manage WPT staff and volunteers participation in WPT's Expos. h. Manage online aspects of Expo registration, sales and promotion. i. Supervise and manage work of Quilt Expo call center supervisor and representatives including training, order management, fulfillment, customer service issues, and budget reconciliation.
3. Under direction of the Director of Development, manage calendar of fundraising and donor cultivation events, for budget, timing, resources and staffing. a. Coordinate smaller fundraising, donor cultivation, general public and community events. b. Advise others on managing events including research on locations, talent coordination, relations with key partners including hosts and partner organizations. Develop systems for managing events and using station resources. c. Collaborate with Communications staff to insure that all event-related messages are consistent, accurate, effective and coordinated with WPT's strategic communication goals. d. Maintain inventory of public communications/event materials including event signage, handouts, video presentations that are adaptable to varied events and presentations. e. Be conversant on trends and other issues for non-profit fundraising events. Research and provide management assessment of new opportunities for fundraising events.
4. Supervise events work of staff and community volunteers. a. Supervise and manage the work of development specialist assigned to Quilt Expo (50%) and support of major giving and board work (40%) and Garden Expo (10%). b. Coordinate and evaluate the work of Communications Department marketing specialist assigned 50% to events. c. Collaborate with Volunteer Manager to develop staffing needs and to set expectations and supervise volunteers.
5. This position also provides support as needed for key WPT events and activities. a. Provide support, as needed, for WPT Spring Auction. b. Support for other WPT community events including pledge drives, Friends board meetings, and Community Engagement events. c. Collaborate with membership department on performance and other events with tickets offered through pledge and membership fundraising. Duties include researching and pursuing opportunities and managing relationships with performers and venues.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS 1. Bachelor's degree and 3 years of successful experience in event planning and management. 2. Very high level of communication skills, in writing and orally. 3. Demonstrated organizational skills to create and manage large-scale, multi-day events that include multiple activities as well as smaller events. 4. Skill and demonstrated success in developing and executing events that meet or exceed fundraising goals and that conclude at or under budget. 5. Experience supervising staff and volunteers. 6. Negotiation skills that achieve best outcomes given budget or contract or other constraints. 7. Success in developing and maintaining productive relationships with internal clients as well as external vendors, clients and stakeholders. 8. Means of transportation to travel to and from event locations within Madison and around the state 9. Promotion and marketing skills to conduct an event that meets the educational and community engagement goals for WPT.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: 1. A minimum of five years of development experience including fundraising, direct solicitation and working with volunteers. 2. Work with high-level volunteers and community leaders. 3. Experience in marketing and promotion of a community event and with institutional messaging through community events. 4. Familiarity with online operations for event registration, commerce and building community.
SALARY: The minimum for this position is $42,000 with actual pay dependent upon experience and qualifications. UW-Extension offers a comprehensive benefits package.
