The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), one of the largest institutes of the world-renowned National Institutes of Health (NIH), conducts and supports a global program of basic and applied research that has led to new therapies, vaccines, diagnostics, and other technologies that have improved the health of millions in the United States and around the world.

American Indians and Alaska Natives continue to experience health disparities when compared to the rest of the U.S. population. Heart disease and cancer are the leading causes of death, but native populations also suffer higher-than-average mortality from diseases like tuberculosis, diabetes, influenza, and complications associated with asthma and substance abuse.

 NIAID works to overcome lingering health disparities in numerous ways:

• Developing candidate vaccines for tuberculosis, malaria, influenza, and other diseases that exact a tremendous toll on American Indians and Alaska Natives 

• Developing medical solutions to the infectious, immunological, and allergic diseases that concern native communities 

• Building an inclusive workforce through the Workplace Diversity Initiative and Affirmative Action programs

• Improving the interaction and participation of the minority scientific community in biomedical research programs
